Laptop Briefcase: Protect Your Notebook From Damages

Besides the stress (which frankly is almost an unavoidable part of every profession), working in a big company is quite interesting, especially the part when you need to prepare a presentation and visit a prospective client. That’s my favourite part of my job as an investment banker since I get to prepare myself, boost my ego a little for a top-notch performance in front of the clients, grab my expensive MacBook and leave the building. And that’s exactly what ruined my day a few days ago: I accidentally got pushed against a wall (literally) and with all my manly body weight, somehow I damaged the monitor of my Mac. I literally felt how my heart stopped for a second, because this was a laptop provided by the company. OMG indeed.

Obviously, I needed to explain what happened and moreover, come up with an argument as to why didn’t I do something to protect it. After thinking about it for a while, I did come up with a reasonable argument: the soft laptop case that came with the laptop didn’t serve its purpose well as it was merely designed for carrying it. Today, there are hard briefcases that come with at least 10mm of thickness in their laminated hardware, which means there’s no way anything could break that protective barrier. I suggested the company that we should get a hard briefcase laptop case for those members that often leave the company for presentations and have to pass through crowded places to get to their destination. The reasons that I backed up my proposal with really made my boss think about this kind of investment. Here’s what I’ve learned from that unpleasant experience and some of the conclusions I came to.

Laptops are expensive, and the work they carry is even more expensive

The damage caused on my laptop was physical: a cracked monitor. That still meant I could get my work transferred on another laptop without any difficulties. And trust me when I tell you that this is a big deal – I worked on that presentation all day and all night and losing a 24-hour work that cost you your sleep is simply unforgivable. So, instead of wondering and freaking out whether the next rainy day when you’re out with your laptop will cost you your hard work, a hard briefcase laptop case could save you half of the worries. Better safe than sorry!

Even though it’s given by the company, it’s still a personal laptop

Everyone knows that once it comes in your hands and you start working with it, it’s your laptop. It is your partner, your belonging. Well, not exactly, but you get the point. You’ve learned your way with it, you know how to work with it, you’ve customized it with photos, arranged all your work in folders with special names and filled your calendar so your laptop keeps track of your duties and meetings for you. If it somehow gets damaged, chances are all this will be gone.

If you decide to work with your own laptop…

Now this is the most painful part. This is the piece of technology for which you probably went through a living hell to save some money to buy it. A MacBook Pro with all the latest and best features? Yup, I know. And since it’s such a good laptop that exceeds the characteristics of anything your company could offer you, you’ve decided to work with it on your own risk and responsibility. That, my friend, means you need to invest in a proper protection for it because if something happens to it by accident, you’re going to be depressed, confused and very unhappy for quite some time. Don’t risk it.
