Distilling your spirits at home can be a fun and rewarding hobby, and with the right equipment, it’s easier than you might think. Imagine the satisfaction of sipping on a smooth, handcrafted vodka or gin that you made yourself. Not only is it a unique and personal experience, but it can also allow you to experiment with different flavours and ingredients to create your perfect spirit.

In this guide, we’ll take you through the home distilling equipment available and provide tips and tricks to help you get started on your home distilling journey. So, let’s get started and discover the wonderful world of homemade spirits!

source: wixstatic.com

Is Brewing Spirits Illegal in Australia?

It’s legal for individuals to distill spirits as long as they have a valid distiller’s license. The Australian Government Department of Home Affairs oversees the production, importation, and exportation of alcohol. There are even some exceptions to this rule.

For example, some states in Australia allow individuals to distill small amounts of spirits without a licence (typically up to a few litres per year) for personal use as long as they are not sold or shared with others. Additionally, some organisations offer classes or workshops on home distilling, where participants can learn about the process and distill spirits under the supervision of a licensed professional.

It’s important to note that laws and regulations regarding home distillation may vary between states and territories in Australia, so it’s best to check the ones applying to your area before starting to make your spirits at home.

source: i.pinimg.com

What Equipment Do You Need for Distilling?

If you’re interested in distilling spirits at home, there are a few essential distilling supplies that you’ll need to get started. Here is a list of the vital pieces besides a steam boiler and conditioner for de-foaming you’ll need to create spirits at home.

Still

The still is the most significant piece of equipment you’ll need to get started. There are different types of stills, including pot, reflux, and column stills. Choose an option that is appropriate for your needs and budget.

Fermenting Vessel

Before you can start distilling, you’ll need to ferment your base ingredient (such as grain, fruit, or vegetables) to create a low-alcohol liquid called “wash.” You’ll need a fermenting vessel to hold the wash while it ferments. A large food-grade plastic bucket and a glass carboy are both acceptable options.

Hydrometer

A hydrometer is a device that calculates a liquid’s specific gravity. You can use it to determine the alcohol content of the wash before and after distillation.

Thermometer

A thermometer is essential for monitoring the temperature of the wash during the distillation process. That’ll help you control the purity of the final product.

Collection Containers

You’ll need a collection container (or containers) to hold the distilled spirits as they come off the still. Glass or stainless steel containers are best, as they are inert and won’t affect the final product’s taste.

Distilling Accessories

There are many other accessories and distilling supplies that you may find helpful when distilling spirits at home, including a wash tub, a stirring spoon, and a funnel. By gathering these items, you’ll have everything you need to get started – just remember to use your equipment responsibly.

How to Choose the Right Home Distilling Equipment?

source: i.pinimg.com

Distilling alcohol at home can be fun and rewarding only if you choose the right equipment to ensure a safe and successful experience. Here are some tips to help you choose the right home equipment pieces:

Determine Your Needs

The first step in choosing is to figure out precisely what you need it for. Will you be distilling small batches of spirits or larger quantities? Do you want a simple setup or something more advanced? Knowing your needs will help you narrow your options and choose distilling supplies suitable for your specific goals.

Consider the Size and Capacity

Home equipment for distilling comes in various sizes, from small tabletop stills to large floor-standing models. Make sure to choose the appropriate accessories for the number of spirits you want to produce. Create a setup that is easy to store when not in use.

Pay Attention to the Materials

It’s important to choose equipment made of high-quality materials built to last. Look for stills and other equipment items made of stainless steel or other durable materials, and make sure that all components are well-constructed and free of defects.

Think about Ease of Use

When shopping, it’s crucial to consider how easy it will be to use too. Look for stills and other equipment that aren’t complicated to assemble, disassemble, and clean. It’s also a good idea to choose a setup that comes with clear and concise instructions.

Look for Additional Features

Some extra features are also worth considering. These can include a built-in thermometer, a sight glass for monitoring the distillation process, and a reflux column to increase the purity of the final product. Consider the features that will be most helpful for your specific needs and choose equipment that has them.

To Sum Up

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced distiller, various distilling item options are available to suit your needs and budget. Remember to check the laws and regulations in your area before attempting to distill and get a valid distiller’s licence if required. We hope this guide has helped introduce you to the world of home distilling and has inspired you to explore this fascinating hobby. Happy distilling!

Have you ever stood in front of the wine aisle at the supermarket and were unable to choose one despite the hundreds of bottles...

Have you ever stood in front of the wine aisle at the supermarket and were unable to choose one despite the hundreds of bottles vying for your attention? How do you decide which of the many bottles of wine would not only provide good value for money but will also taste good and complement your evening meal?

Making the selection is either completely random for most of us, or an exercise in submission to the same bottle you bought last week, the week before that, and the week before that. The only way out of the randomness-versus-routine issue is to understand the flavour characteristics of each wine. So, if you prefer drinking white wine, there are a few things you should know before choosing a nice bottle.

Chardonnay

Source: foleyfamilywines.com

Chardonnay is dry, medium-to-full-bodied, and acidic, with mild tannins. With tastes ranging from apple and lemon, to papaya and pineapple, plus undertones of vanilla when aged in oak, the versatile variety of chardonnay white wine is the most widely available wine on the market that appeals to every audience.

Chablis, France, is a well-known Old World Chardonnay wine-growing area. Climates akin to Chablis are typically cold, giving Chardonnay wine a unique leaner character. These lighter-bodied chards are usually accompanied by pear, green apple, melon, and delicate apricot aromas.

On the other hand, Chardonnay cultivated in warmer climates tends to emanate richer tropical fruit aromas, such as guava, peach, pineapple, and banana. While Chardonnay thrives on chalky and clay soils, it is also a highly adaptable vine. When given the proper amount of attention during the growing season, it can adapt to most soil and climatic types.

Crisp, clean, unoaked chardonnay white wine, such as Chablis, pairs nicely as an aperitif with goat cheese, as well as oysters, shellfish, or delicate fish. Medium-bodied wines complement swordfish, white meats such as chicken and pig tenderloin, and mature cheeses such as gruyere and gouda. Higher alcohol fat, rich, oaky styles can tolerate thicker cream sauces, grilled meats with higher fat content, and even game birds.

Sauvignon Blanc

Source: dailymoss.com

It’s crisp, dry, and fruity, but it’s the green-and-grassy aromas and stinging acidity that sets Sauvignon Blanc apart from all of the other wines. From Bordeaux to New Zealand, California, and beyond, this grape is widely grown around the world, which makes it one of the most popular white wines in the world.

It’s created from green-skinned grapes that can thrive in a variety of climates, resulting in food-friendly wines at a variety of pricing ranges. Because of its low sugar level, this wine is best served young, within 18 months after its vintage. Sweet Sauvignon Blancs with high sugar content, on the other hand, age nicely and can be kept for a long period of time.

Sauvignon might be sharp and green or luscious and tropical, but it always has its own signature acidity. It’s refreshing, easy to recognize, and there’s a style for everyone, which is why Sauvignon Blanc’s fan base continues to increase. Sauvignon Blanc has various synonyms, including Sauvignon, Fumé Blanc from the United States, Muskat-Silvaner from Austria, and Feigentraube from Germany.

Moscato

Moscato is a sweet, medium to low-acidity wine made from Muscat grapes in Italy. The Muscat grape is planted all over the world, from Australia to France to South America, and is said to be one of history’s oldest grapes. A short note on Muscat nomenclature: Moscato is the Italian term for Muscat, and different nations have different names for the Muscats they manufacture.

In Spain, the term “Moscatel” is used, whilst in Germany, it is called “Muskateller”. Technically, this wine comes from Italy, as Muscat grapes flourish in the warm, Mediterranean climate of Italy. They can be found from Piedmont and Trentino Alto-Adige to the southern islands of Sicily and Pantelleria, with each location creating a wine with distinct Moscato qualities.

While there are over 200 recognized Muscat grape varietals, the most popular are Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains and Muscat of Alexandria. Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains is the most widely planted grape for Moscato wine in Italy, followed by Muscat of Alexandria.

Moscato is sweet, thus it should be paired with dishes that have opposing taste profiles, spicy, sour, salty, bitter. While its sweet fruity flavour might make it difficult to combine with the main course, Moscato pairs well with appetizers, sweet brunch foods, dessert, and can be used as an aperitif on its own.

Pinot Grigio

Source: vinepair.com

Though at first glance it may be confused with the tasty Chardonnay white wine, you’d easily distinguish it for being much lighter. As a light-bodied, dry wine it’s got scents of lemon-lime, pear, and stone fruits such as peach and apricot. Almond, baking spices, and honeysuckle fragrances may also be detected. Flavours range from melon to green apple, and some even have a faint tropical or citrus fruit taste. There are frequently honey, raw almond, or mineral components as well.

The wine’s acidity ranges from medium to high, preventing it from becoming too sweet. Pinot Grigio goes exceptionally well with shellfish, sushi, and ceviche. Also, it goes well with light pasta dishes and cheeses such as gruyere and manchego. Because the wine is fairly acidic, it is best to avoid matching it with meals that contain a lot of acids, such as citrus fruits or tomato-based dishes.

Riesling

Riesling is a beautifully refreshing fragrant white wine native to Germany’s Rhine River farming regions. Riesling has a flavour element of apples, apricots, peaches, and pears, as well as a high level of acidity. It is one of the few wines that has its own distinctive bottle form, which is a tall, slim glass that is very easy to identify on the shelf. All of these are some of the top reasons to buy riesling wine.

With little to no oak influence, a reluctance to mix with other grape types, and no malolactic fermentation interfering with the grape’s character, the grape is allowed to shine. Combine these taste elements with the lighter-bodied character, the need to be refrigerated before serving, and the frequent touch of residual sugar, and you’ve got a winning combination. It truly is an energizing wine that promises to be both bright and fresh from start to end.

Pick from a nice mini gin and tonic gift set, an elegant pack of wine or some classic whisky specials to ensure a good time.

As the holidays are approaching, people are slowly getting into the festive spirit. Christmas trees are decorated, fairy lights are flickering all over town, we get to munch on delicious Christmas treats and exchange gifts. But Christmas presents are not meant to be given and opened on Christmas day only. They can make the perfect party starters too. When attending a party, you cannot go wrong with bringing along a flavoured, beautifully bottled gin or well-aged whisky. Yes, alcohol-based presents are super popular and are a great way to warm up during the jolly season. Here’s a list of creative alcohol gift ideas that will make the ideal party opener.

Unique Alcohol Gifts

Let the Party Be-Gin

Gin is definitely the ideal go-to alcoholic beverage for almost any type of occasion. Go for a tasty and creative mini gin and tonic gift set to ensure a super fun time! These sets are of great quality and will be responsible for the life of the party.

Source: pineterst.com.au

Gin is loved and appreciated by many people, and that’s for some good reasons. Gin is known to be the only alcohol that is super low on calories. That being said, bloating is completely off of the table and your waistline is out of risk. Next up, gin is known to be very rich in antioxidants, which means it will speed up your body’s regenerative process, contributing to glowing and wrinkle-free skin. It also helps fight off all sorts of diseases, mainly heart-related ones.

To make the most out of your gift, ask yourself – what goes with gin as a gift? You can get creative with your present and add personal notes inside the box, or you can opt for getting delicious foods that will put an accent on the taste of gin. Foods that pair perfectly with this type of spirit are cheese and meat platters, nuts and seeds, berries and a dish of smoked salmon. Gin can also be mixed with lime juice which has its own health perks. Overall, this gift idea makes an excellent choice for a holiday party.

For Wine Lovers

Another great option is wine. It is definitely a Christmas’ favourite and people can’t deny that they love it! It has been around for a very long time and given that we still drink it, it’s undeniable that its taste is definitely timeless. So, yes – you cannot go wrong by bringing along a quality red wine pack for an unforgettable holiday event.

Firstly, as mentioned above, wine has been consumed by our ancestors all the way back to 7000 BC. It is a historically-significant drink that has been adored by people throughout time. Some cultures were even entirely dedicated to the existence of wine itself, and they worshipped and drank it daily. To this day, wine is still widely popular. Even doctors recommend drinking one glass a day, mainly because of its’ healthy properties. It is very rich in antioxidants which help protect our bodies from all sorts of diseases, mainly heart-based ones. So, not only will wine boost your mood, it will help your overall well-being too if consumed in moderation!

Now, for Christmas, more specifically, it’s usually red wine that is preferred. You won’t fail to impress if you choose well-aged shiraz, merlot or sauvignon. During the cold season, it’s also quite popular to drink mulled wine, which is a heated up variety. It will perfectly warm you up and really spark up the mood.

Source: pineterst.com.au

Lastly, wine-food pairings are a must. Top up your red wine pack with some creative gourmet dishes that will put an accent on the wine taste and make the guests fall in love even more. However, it’s important to be careful when picking the food platter when it comes to wine, as they all are of a different taste. For example, chardonnay matches perfectly with any type of fish, the rose goes with a nice serving of multiple cheese varieties, cabernet is best with red meat and syrah is topped off with spicy dishes. Knowing your wine and wine combos before purchasing is crucial, so remember to read up.

Fun O’Clock With Whisky on the Rocks

Lastly, you can warm up the party with a nice set of well-aged whisky specials that will add to the holiday experience. Whisky is especially favoured during the cold season because of its significant inviting flavour and aroma. Now, there are various different kinds you can choose from when it comes to this spirit.

Source: pineterst.com.au

You can opt for a heavier, more robust taste with a touch of caramel, oak or butterscotch. This flavouring usually goes for the bourbon or scotch type of whisky. It’s perfect if you really want a stronger taste that will go down causing a tingly feeling in your throat. Next, if you prefer a lighter taste, another variety you can go for is the sweet kind. It mainly gives attractive aromas of vanilla or coconut along with a fruity flavour that will feel soft and smooth as you drink it. This lighter kind of whisky can be much more tolerable for some people too, so it’s smart to bring at least two different, elegant bottles that will offer both strong and gentle tasting.

To really add to the joy, consider pairing the bottles with whisky-suitable foods such as Christmas cookies made of dark chocolate, a delicious apple pie, pork or smoked salmon, dried nuts and any type of cheese you prefer. This type of menu will bring out the significant taste of the whisky even more, and the guests will love you for it.

In conclusion, bringing whisky on a holiday or on any other type of event will make both you and the party-goers happy. Besides the distinctive flavour, it also offers health advantages as well. Various studies have shown that it is able to help fight cancer and heart diseases, aid in weight loss, reduce stress and it is even good for diabetics as won’t cause the blood sugars to spike up.

Final Thoughts

Overall, mixing up the holiday gatherings with quality, flavourful spirits will definitely boost up everyone’s mood. So, next time don’t go empty-handed and prepare yourself. Pick from a nice mini gin and tonic gift set, an elegant pack of wine or some classic whisky specials to ensure a good time. You can even get your present online and save yourself time shopping.

Syrah wine is widely known for its rich aroma and over the years it has been the first choice of many wine lovers that appreciate the taste of quality wine. Nowadays, Syrah wine can be found everywhere, but that wasn’t always the case. In fact, a long process of improvements and transformation precedes the Syrah wine we know today.

source: irishtimes.com

The Origin and History of Syrah Wine

Although there are many speculations about the origin of Syrah wine (some think the Romans are the first ones to bring it to Europe, others think it may be coming from Iran since there is an Iranian city called Shiraz), the truth is Shiraz wine comes from France as do many other grape varieties and wines. But not long after, this grape variety got spread all around the world with Australia being the first stop. Shiraz was brought to Australia somewhere in the 1830s and until the mid 18th century there were already plenty of fields all over the South filled with Shiraz grapes.

source: media.winefolly.com

Nowadays, Shiraz grapes are being grown in the US, Chile, Spain, France, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Shiraz is considered to be the 6th most grown grape variety in the world. And, even though slight differences can be noticed between Australian Shiraz and the one from Spain for instance, it’s the same variety only affected by different climates. Now, when it comes to price, Shiraz wine is quite affordable considering some wines are more expensive.

The Characteristics of Syrah Wine

Syrah has a deep red colour and a very rich and complex flavour. It’s like no other, and wine lovers choose it precisely because they want to experience something unique. And uniqueness is all Shiraz wine is about. Now, no two bottles of Syrah red wine on the market taste the same. The flavour depends on the grapes themselves and the region where they’ve been grown as well as the winemaker. Every winery has its own way of making Syrah wine. But, overall Syrah wine is bold and full-bodied, fruity and very aromatic with notes of plum, pepper spice, vanilla and a hint of smoke.

source: vinodelvida.com

Syrah is a medium-acidity wine with moderate to high levels of alcohol and plenty of tannins. On the palate, you can sense the taste of herbs, red and black fruits as well as violets. Syrah wine gets a great flavour especially when it is being aged in oak barrels. It is a really intense dry wine with depth and a smooth finish. You can drink it as soon as it is bottled, but it also has an amazing taste after a couple of years have passed. Usually, Shiraz wine lasts around 10 years (give or take) given it is stored properly in a wine cellar.

A fine wine complements food ideally. As per the pairing, Shiraz wine goes great with fast food – burgers and pizza, but it’s also classy and the perfect pairing for fancy dinners. Note that before you start pouring the wine, it is best if you cool it a bit in the refrigerator. Not too much, but around 15 minutes or so. The ideal serving temperature for Shiraz wine is 16-18 degrees Celsius. At that temperature, you can feel all the flavours and aromas and truly sense the alcohol.

source: theoremvineyards.com

If you’re looking to create the perfect match when it comes to a nice meal and Shiraz wine, then you should go for pasta with a nice sauce, mushroom dish, stew or veal with a side of vegetables. Shiraz also pairs well with barbecue. So, if you’re a fan of grilled meat, you shouldn’t miss the opportunity to introduce this red wine to the party. Both the wine and the grilled meat have intense and rich flavours and they go really well together.

Health Benefits from Drinking Syrah Wine

Now, aside from being immensely tasty and of great quality, Shiraz wine is also beneficial for your health. Yes, you read that right. In moderate doses (of course) this wine has proven to be good for your overall health. That’s a reason more to pour yourself a glass guilt-free.

Shiraz grapes contain flavonoids, resveratrol and quercetin, and red wine, in general, contains plenty of antioxidants. The antioxidants help a lot in preventing damage inside the cells and slow down their ageing.

It has also been shown to be great for the bones. It contains silicone, which can make the bones denser and stronger, thus preventing osteoporosis or fractures from happening.

Red wine aids cardiovascular health as well. It protects the heart and prevents blood clots that can lead to strokes and heart attacks. But you need to take into consideration that heavy drinking will have the exact opposite effect on your heart and damage it beyond repair. So, drink responsibly.

Syrah and red wine in general help with controlling blood sugar levels especially in people that suffer from diabetes. It’s actually the resveratrol (a compound found in red wine) that does the blood sugar regulation. Studies have shown that people taking resveratrol supplements had normal blood sugar levels as well as normal cholesterol levels and stable blood pressure.

The antioxidants present in Syrah can help with the common cold and other diseases too.

Red wines like Syrah might be just the thing you need to improve your cognitive abilities and the ability to remember things faster and better.

Red wine can help you maintain a healthy weight. There’s a chemical in red wine that reduces the fat cells in the human body. So, it won’t be a bad idea to include wine in your balanced diet to achieve better results.

Red wine is known to help treat a number of digestive disorders. It has anti-bacterial properties and helps a lot in case your stomach is irritated.

There’s no doubt whatsoever that red wine is a real mood enhancer. But there’s another thing red wine does – keeps depression away. Studies have shown that moderate drinking of red wine can significantly decrease the risk of depression in people. Ultimately, people who drink red wine on the regular are less likely to get depressed than those who don’t drink red wine at all.

Let’s imagine this together for a second – you come home after a long day at work, feeling completely drained and just looking forward to kicking your feet up while enjoying a glass of your favourite liquor. As you tiredly shuffle through the kitchen, you realise you’ve poured the last drop of alcohol you had the other day. Bummer. And you’re certainly not going to go to the store now to stock up. You’ve just got back.

Source: bonvivantgroup.com.au

Can your day get any worse? You probably wouldn’t want to find out. But can your day get any better? Of course, it can and we’ll gladly tell you how. What if you had a never-ending supply of your favourite liquor in the comfort of your own home? Just think about it, you can have as many drinks as you want at any time of day without going to the store. Sounds amazing, doesn’t it? Now you can stop thinking about it and start doing it instead. Buckle up as we guide you through the delicious world of homebrewing.

Is Homebrewing Worth It?

The short answer is yes, there are plenty of reasons why you should start homebrewing. For starters, you get to enjoy the limitless experimentation and customisation you can do in terms of taste and appearance. Not only is it a highly enjoyable and rewarding hobby, it can also save you quite a bit of money. Sure, it’s a somewhat hefty investment initially but the payoff is much more satisfying in the long run. Think about it this way, brewing your own alcohol at home is a much cheaper alternative to buying a bottle or two every now and then, assuming you don’t buy the cheapest ones available. In this way, you can dip your toes into a new hobby without dipping in your budget. A total win-win situation, don’t you think?

Plus, can you imagine how cool you’d look in front of your friends? Giving out homemade liquor as a gift? Unforgettable. Truly heartwarming. You can even start a joint brewing hobby with some of your friends. How fun would that be? You’ll share your preferences and ideas with one another as you enjoy sipping on your latest inventions.

Source: thespruceeats.com

Is Homebrewing Illegal?

It’s completely legal so long as you have a licence. This shouldn’t come as a surprise since nowadays you need a licence for virtually everything. Make sure you ask the authorities in your area for guidance on how to get one so that you can start making liquor at home.

How Can You Use Spirits at Home?

The whole point of including homebrew spirits into the mix is to add a bit of flavour to spice up your alcohol. You’ll start off with neutral, white spirits as your base, including vodka, rum or gin. The reason why you’re supposed to choose one of these three spirits is that they’re unscented, transparent and don’t have a specific taste. This is what makes them the perfect foundation for you to build on, depending on your preferences.

Once you’re done with that, you’ll have to move on to the next step. This part is where you start to personalise the base using rich homemade spirits and essences. Want to add a bit of fruity edge to your alcohol? You’ve got it. Looking for that sweet flowery aroma? Say no more. How about that good ol’ mix of vanilla and caramel? Done and done. There’s a whole bunch of flavours you can try out when you start using homemade spirits. Once you get all your ingredients in, let them sit for a while to infuse. The timing may vary which is why you should pay close attention to the instructions on the product itself.

Word of advice – when you start experimenting with new flavours and concoctions, it’s a good idea to use about a quarter of a bottle. By doing this, if you don’t like the final product, you still have the rest of the bottle along with the remainder of your resources that you can use to start fresh. The whole process is built on trial and error so don’t get discouraged if your initial results aren’t what you were expecting. With a bit more time to practice, you’ll start using homebrew spirits like a pro.

Additional Homebrewing Tips

Before you begin your brewing journey, read through a few more tips on how to make the most out of the experience.

Source: infusionspiral.com

Start Off Simple

You don’t have to go overboard with the recipes when you’re just starting out. We know it’s easy to get carried away like a child in a candy store but if you do this, you make things unnecessarily complicated and difficult. Start off simple and build your way up once you get used to the brewing process as a whole.

Organise Your Equipment

We can’t stress this enough. While you are your own boss here, it’s nice to keep all your equipment neatly stored and ready to go. Make a list of things you’ll need before you start brewing so that you don’t forget anything important. And lastly, don’t forget to properly clean and sanitise everything to prevent contamination.

Use Fresh Ingredients

The overall quality of your final product relies entirely on having the best and freshest ingredients. For this reason, you should visit a nearby homebrew store to stock up on everything you need before you get down to business.

Homebrewing is a pretty good idea, don’t you think? There are plenty of reasons why you should start homebrewing and truth be told, it’s quite a rewarding hobby. You have a constant supply of your favourite alcohol in the comfort of your home. No need to reluctantly drag your feet to the store every time you’ve run out of it. After all, that can be quite a hassle after a long day’s work. All that becomes history when you start to make your alcohol at home.

When thinking of homemade alcohol, people’s minds instantly jump to beer. But, here’s a wild thought, beer isn’t the only type of alcohol out there. There are so many other liquors you can start making at home that can be just as enjoyable and fruitful. Here’s a humble suggestion – vodka. It’s an unusual choice, isn’t it?

source: unsplash.com

Think how impressed everyone will be when they hear you’re making it at home. A real pro. Master of the craft. Sure, people would want to know more about the process and you can stroke your ego by sharing your glorious secrets. Sounds great, right? Great. Here’s what you need to know about the art of distilling vodka at home so that you can get on it as soon as possible.

Is It Cheaper to Make Your Own Vodka?

As surprising as it may sound, it actually is. It might seem like a hefty investment when your first kick-off because you need to be equipped with the right tools. Eventually, though, it’s much cheaper to make your own vodka rather than making a trip to the store every time you want a drink. That is, assuming that you don’t buy the cheapest ones available.

Is It Illegal to Distill Vodka at Home?

It’s actually not, as long as you have a license. These days, you’re required to have a license for practically everything and distilling vodka at home is no exception to this rule. Ask around in your area what documentation you need to commence your brewing journey.

source: distiller.com

How Do You Make Vodka at Home?

Distillation

First off, you’ll need to start with the basic ingredients – fermented grains in the likes of rye, wheat or corn. You can even use potatoes or fruits as well. The point is to ferment the ingredients in order to extract the sugar or starch which will then be used to distill the concoction to increase its alcohol level. The initial distillation batch usually takes up about 4 to 7 hours. Make sure to keep the temperature stable throughout, at approximately 80°C so that you have the ideal circumstances for proper distillation.

When it comes to the type of still used in your vodka distilling kit, copper stills are the best option for many brewers. They’re quite sturdy and provide the necessary insulation to get the most out of the brewing experience.

Vodka Essence

Vodka essences give your alcohol a specific taste or special edge if you will. Generally speaking, these types of essences are added to moonshine or non-flavoured alcoholic beverages, such as, quite conveniently, vodka. So if you don’t want your homemade alcohol to have the same old, regular taste, spice it up a bit by adding an essence. Some exotic fruity essences add a flowery aroma and taste while other classic style blends will undoubtedly leave you wanting more.

When using these types of essences, it’s important to keep in mind the recommended amount. Usually, one bottle of essence is enough to produce around 3-4 litres of vodka. Check individual packaging for more specific information and always follow the instructions for the best outcome. Trust us, you won’t be disappointed.

Is Homemade Vodka Safe to Drink?

source: pinterest.com

Shockingly, it is. Just because you make it at home doesn’t mean that it’s any less good than store-bought alcohol. As long as you follow all the safety guidelines and health precautions, your vodka will bring you no harm. On the bright side, making it at home gives you a lot of room for customisation and tailoring it specifically to your liking so that’s one good thing to look forward to. You can have your unique blend of flavours and aromas that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. Sounds really special, doesn’t it?

Health Benefits of Drinking Vodka

Normally, you wouldn’t associate vodka with a healthy lifestyle. Wouldn’t blame you either because it’s not conventionally viewed as such. But, you might be surprised to find out just how beneficial it actually is, when taken in moderation of course. First and foremost, it’s a great way to relax and reduce stress. It calms down both body and mind, just like any other alcoholic beverage.

Because of this, it can also help you fall asleep which is an added bonus if you’re struggling with insomnia. Another advantage is that it helps combat potential cardiovascular diseases and complications. This includes an irregular heartbeat, clogged arteries and even strokes. Those are definitely some serious conditions. And last but not least, it improves the overall health and appearance of your skin and hair. It nourishes, moisturizes and provides the necessary nutrients for a stunning look.

All things considered, we don’t see why you shouldn’t start making your own vodka today. Do you?

Since ancient times, we are all familiar with the role of wine. Enjoying wine is often associated with enjoying life. There is no event...

Since ancient times, we are all familiar with the role of wine. Enjoying wine is often associated with enjoying life. There is no event that goes unaccompanied by the taste of this divine drink. While it was first primarily used mainly mixed with water as a safer option than plain contaminated water, it quickly became the essential drink of every household and the life of every party. Special accent was even placed on the production of wine, and ancient peoples were very much aware of how the whole process goes and how to store it.

In the past decades, wine tasting started growing into some sort of a science of its own with many wine contests happening worldwide to find the quality wine everyone should be after. However, with so many tastes and so many different palates, it is impossible to rely on an expert’s opinion to choose your own wine. More often than not, people overspend on wine or buy it from supermarkets simply because it is a fast option. Supermarkets are not always the best way to go though, if you want to get wine that your palate finds exquisite, and here are a few reasons backing this.

The first reason people buy wine from supermarkets is the convenient price. However, a great discount does not always indicate a great deal. You will find many wine offers that seem ideal or too good to be true (which is usually the case), but the price you get to pay is not a deal price as you believe. If you visit the supermarket some time later you would see the same wine costing much less so you actually pay more than the wine’s worth.

If you do your own research, you will be able to find online wine special deals that are more to your liking. You get to do all this from the comfort of your home, and still find the ideal wine because with the right warehouse, you get to see the exact quality, read all about the wines for sale and get the right wine. While in supermarkets you tend to overlook some wines due to the large quantities that surround you, online you can check them all one by one carefully and then make your decision.

Though everyone is familiar with “wines age well”, supermarket wines you buy at a discount will turn out to be a waste of money if you intend to store them for special occasions and open them 10 years later only to find out you have to throw them away. Keeping such wine longer will not improve its taste. Also, you do not have much choice with buying wines on a bulk if you consider the quality, basically you are left with supermarket wines as your best bet in getting value for the money you spend on a bottle.

With online wine special deals this is not the case. You get to pick from a huge selection of wines based on their price and the region they come from. You do not have to necessarily choose French wine to know you have chosen quality, but you can also get the same from nearby regions. For instance, you cannot go wrong with the Barossa Valley Estate Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre if it is rich fruit taste you are after.

Once you have found your wine, you have to remember moderation is key.

I adore wine! Wine has been a huge part of the human experience since ancient times, probably the most widely chosen beverage to enjoy...

I adore wine!

Wine has been a huge part of the human experience since ancient times, probably the most widely chosen beverage to enjoy at any kind of social gathering or in the privacy of one’s home. One awesome and little-known fact about wine is that it was initially invented as to purify undrinkable water. This ancient times wine was a lot stronger even though they used to mix it with water. Strangely enough, back in those days people weren’t drinking wine to get drunk and they did not drink it for the flavour either. Water purification was the only reason for quite long until one special day dawned and wine’s reputation grew strong.

Today wine is used as a pleasure juice for so many festive occasions, or (if you are like me) wine can also keep you great company for those nights when all you want is to stay at home and watch a film on Netflix.

The majority of people tend to see the price as a starting point when comparing and assessing different types of wines. But is the price what really defines wine? If you ask me, I will surely say -”No!”. I have tried many expensive wines, made by the best grapes, kept in the oldest and most expensive wine barrels made in France. But were those the best? Well, not really. To be completely honest, I had to break the bank for a bottle of wine a couple of times in order to understand that $20 wines are not that bad at all – and that is an understatement. Whenever I drink cheap wine, I just cannot get enough. It suits my taste, it is colourful and intense!

Is It Just My Point of View or Can Science Prove It Too?

Well, if we take into consideration the research done at The University of Hertfordshire, then the answer is – yes, yes, yes! They tested over 600 people with double blind wine study and neither the researchers nor the participant knew which ones were the expensive wines and which ones were the cheapest ones. The cheap wines costed less than $10 per bottle, and the expensive ones were priced between $20 and $60. They used a various mixture of red and white wines including Sauvignon Blanc, Rioja, Claret and many more. The average person could not guess the expensive bottle more than 50% of the time. It is just like flipping a coin. The results confirm my previous assumption that price is not as relevant as it may seem to some.

There was a similar study back in 2008, where researchers assembled 6000 people to taste wines ranging from $5 up to $150 per bottle. The results revealed that more than 60% of the people that were asked to choose the best wine, picked from the cheapest wines.

The results showed that the best wines are the ones we love and it seems like price has little to do with that. Therefore, whenever I drink cheap wine, I realize I don’t have to pay a lot to get what I want!

Ah, Pinot Noir! Just the colour will lure you into drinking it. Not as noble as its cousins (Syrah and Cab), Pinot Noir is...

Ah, Pinot Noir! Just the colour will lure you into drinking it. Not as noble as its cousins (Syrah and Cab), Pinot Noir is still so darn special. One of the oldest grapes in the world, the medium low tannin and the silky flavours of cherry, vanilla, cola, tobacco and caramel, explode lovingly in your mouth. Whereas there is no reason why one shouldn’t buy and drink Pinot Noir, there are five predominant reasons why it is one of the most mouthwatering and famous grape varieties out there and why it should be on your to-drink list.

Versatile

One of the most important reasons to opt for Pinot Noir is its versatility. It can be paired with almost any kind of food. If we have to name type of dish to avoid with these wine, it will have to be the overly spicy ones. Not to say that the pairing will be wrong, but the spices will prevent the full development of the spectacular taste in the palate, and you don’t want that, of course. Simple, yet enriched dishes are the best choice for this intense wine. If you are entertaining guests for the night and are serving mushroom based meal, get a bottle or two of the seductive 2013 Mandala Yarra Valley Pinot Noir.

Prominent

It is almost as if there isn’t a part of the world that doesn’t grow this type of wine. Coming mainly from Romania, France, New Zealand, this wine always entrances with incredible taste and its name triggers a vision of luxury and prestige. Not only when you want to feel glamorous should you opt for Pinot Noir, but it is surely a wine that can accept almost any kind of challenge. Pinot Noir is also one of the three grape varieties that are used for the making of Champagne – the world’s most famous sparkling wine! Yes, you cannot get higher than being one of the three and only ambassadors in the palace of Champagne.

Omnipresent

Many of the most expensive wines in the world are made from the Pinor Noir grape variety, so there is no wonder how it became famous in the world of glamor. Its name always triggers positive emotions as it is also contemplated as a wine used for celebrating the joys of life. There simply cannot be one sole reason for not trying this wine on several occasions, be it an important event or a casual dinner, this wine is your social butterfly in the wine and dine universe.

Deep Roots

Along with all other positive features, Pinot Noir also has history on its side. This might have been one of the oldest grapes ever harvested and produced. It is thought that the ancient Roman started the craze, and we are left with the duty to maintain and better it.

What is the first thing that comes to mind when someone says ‘wine’? I bet it is France. Right? French make world’s best wines....

What is the first thing that comes to mind when someone says ‘wine’? I bet it is France. Right? French make world’s best wines. Few words revealing an enormous truth. Despite the fact that there are other wine regions in the world that take pride in producing some of the most popular wine brands, France takes pride in producing the most quality and authentic bottles of wine in the wine history.

In fact, French wine is a mirror of the French people themselves – elegant, sophisticated and well-dressed, with a special affection and appreciation towards the good things in life. And wine, is definitely a good thing in life, won’t you agree? By being exceptionally tasty, beautiful and well-mannered, French wine makes a perfect companion to different types of food, especially when it comes to delicate and luxurious meals that simply leave you without breath.

The truth is, bottles of French red and white that come with low price tags, still feature great quality. And not to mention the quality of the most expensive bottles of special French wine. But what is it that makes special French wine so wanted? Why are French wines top rated by passionate wine lovers and those not-so-crazy-about-wine?

As wine experts say, many qualities make French wines authentic. The number one reason is the fact that they have been making wine longer than anyone else. The second reason would be their winemaking philosophy – matching the grape with the right type of soil and climate. And finally, the amazing variety. France does not produce a couple hundred different grapes (as is the case with cheeses), but the country does offer different types of wine. The top-quality and special French wine come from the Bordeaux region. Other renowned wine brands coming from the magical land of cheese, wine and romance, are the reds Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, and the whites Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc.

Each wine region in France produces wine with special characteristics that cannot be found in the composition of any other wine. From Alsace’s stylish white and the classics of Burgundy and Bordeaux, to the cool bottles of wine from the Loire Valley, the warm Languedoc-Roussillon wines, the powerful offerings of the Rhone and the northern fastness of the Champagne, choices for ultimate pleasure and perfect wine moments are unlimited.

Trust me, if you were to choose a wine from one region, you’d probably choose a French wine. It will never bore you.
