Bridesmaid Must-Haves: 5 Essentials and the Reasons for Adding Them to Your List
Getting excited to walk down the aisle for your bestie or sister? To be asked to be a bridesmaid is such an honour, but with that honour comes some responsibility. From standing alongside the bride to helping her get through the wedding prep madness, you’ll want to be ready for the big day. Have a few essentials in your bag, and you’ll feel well-equipped, relaxed, and prepared for anything, an emotional meltdown, a shoe malfunction, or a fashion emergency, for example. Here’s what to bring and why you need it.
Dress
Let’s start with the obvious: the dress. If the bride opted for timeless, current or utterly bespoke, then the bridesmaid dress plays a significant role in the atmosphere of the day. Based on the type of wedding, dresses could be floor-length, glamorous midi dresses or something more casual and free-flowing for a beach or garden wedding.
It’s worth making sure the dress fits properly well ahead of time. A professional alteration, even a small one, can make a world of difference. Comfort is also key. You’ll be wearing this dress for hours, posing for photos, mingling with guests, and dancing the night away. Choose undergarments that match the dress colour and are seamless if possible. A supportive bra or stick-on option may also be necessary, depending on the neckline.
Shoes

And then on to shoes, the unsung heroes or sneaky villains of any formal outfit. The perfect pair will have you strutting confidently down the aisle, but the wrong pair will have you hobbling halfway through the reception. A great pair of bridesmaid shoes needs to offer a balance between fashion and comfort, and it’s worth taking a little extra effort to find a pair that looks good and feels comfortable on your feet.
There are plenty of styles to choose from, depending on how the bride wants you to look. Strappy heels are classic for black-tie weddings and pair beautifully with floor-length dresses. Block heels give you a bit more support, which is great for outdoor weddings when you’re likely on grass or gravel. Wedges are another dressy, comfortable option, and flats or elegant sandals suit more relaxed, boho-chic weddings. If you never wear heels, don’t feel you have to go high. A lower heel with a cushioned insole will be just as intelligent.
Perhaps the single most significant thing to consider is how long you’ll be wearing them. You’re likely to be on your feet from early morning through until late at night. So, choose soft insole shoes, ankle support or padding under the ball of your foot. Wearing them in at home a little before the big day is also a good idea. Thus, you can identify rubbing or pinching beforehand and apply gel inserts or heel grips if required.
Also, pack an extra pair if possible, even a good pair of comfy flats or slides to change into once you’re dancing, your feet will be very grateful for that. The goal is to be just as pretty and feel just as glamorous when you’re exiting the ceremony as you did when you walked in, without the pain.
Jewellery

Jewellery is where your personality can shine, even if the rest of your outfit is coordinated. Some brides may give specific instructions or provide matching pieces to create a cohesive look, while others will leave it up to you. Either way, your accessories should enhance your dress, not overpower it.
Delicate necklaces, simple bracelets or classic studs are what you need to pull it off most of the time. If your wedding dress has a high neck or heavy beading, you might skip the necklace and opt for statement earrings instead. Less is more. You don’t want to overpower the bride or take attention away from the dress itself.
Toiletries
Weddings are all-day events, and an emergency make-up bag will be your best-kept secret. It’s your on-the-fly touch-up kit. Lip balm, pressed powder, blotting papers, a travel-sized deodorant, and breath mints are great to have on hand. If you’re sporting fake lashes or heavier makeup, throw in some lash adhesive and a tiny mascara too.
Emergency Kit
Let’s be realistic, even the most organised weddings are going to have a problem or two. And that’s why all bridesmaid groups should have a mini emergency kit handy. Don’t stress about making it huge; just a few things could be a lifesaver.
A sewing kit is a must. Loose hems, popped buttons or a dress strap coming undone mid-photo? No problem if you’ve got a needle and thread. Safety pins are a quick fix for wardrobe malfunctions, and they’re handy for attaching flowers or pinning boutonnieres.
Stain removers like a small stain pen or wipes can be a lifesaver, especially when red wine and white gowns are in the same place at the same time. You have no idea what is going to happen, but being prepared lets you handle it with a smile instead of panic.
Bridesmaid duty is more than just standing around looking pretty for photos, it’s about being there for the person you love and helping make their special day one they will never forget. With the right dress, the right shoes, thoughtful accessories and a few emergency treats, you’ll be equipped to face whatever the day brings.
